Signs of the Times – Dividing Jerusalem

THE OBAMA PEACE PLAN INCLUDES PERMANENTLY DIVIDING THE CITY OF JERUSALEM

Michael Snyder

Barack Obama’s “two state” peace plan would not just permanently divide the land of Israel. It would also permanently divide the city of Jerusalem. It is anticipated that the “Kerry Plan”, which is expected to be revealed to the public soon, will call for a Palestinian capital in east Jerusalem without specifying the exact borders.

According to some media reports, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has approached Palestinian leadership with the idea of locating the Palestinian capital in the neighborhood of Beit Hanina. Of course the details of any peace agreement will change as negotiations progress, but one thing is becoming increasingly clear – the Palestinians will never accept an undivided Jerusalem and the U.S. government is going to pressure Israel to hand part of the holy city over to them. But if Israel gives in and accepts a “peace plan” that includes the permanent division of Jerusalem, it will end up being absolutely disastrous for Israel, for the Palestinians and for the United States.

In many ways, the Obama administration finds itself stuck between a rock and a hard place, and the status of Jerusalem is the most “burdensome stone” of all. Obama and Kerry desperately want to cement their legacies by getting the Israelis and the Palestinians to agree to a peace plan before Obama’s term is over, but the two sides are far apart on a number of issues.

The Palestinians have convinced Obama and Kerry that they will never, ever accept a deal that does not include a Palestinian capital in east Jerusalem, so Obama and Kerry have decided that their best bet is to try to get the Israelis to cave in on their demand for an undivided holy city.

It is now an open secret that the Kerry Plan is going to call for a Palestinian capital in east Jerusalem. The following comes from a recent article by Thomas Friedman of the New York Times…

The “Kerry Plan,” likely to be unveiled soon, is expected to call for an end to the conflict and all claims, following a phased Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank (based on the 1967 lines), with unprecedented security arrangements in the strategic Jordan Valley. The Israeli withdrawal will not include certain settlement blocs, but Israel will compensate the Palestinians for them with Israeli territory. It will call for the Palestinians to have a capital in Arab East Jerusalem and for Palestinians to recognize Israel as the nation state of the Jewish people.
And the Palestinians clearly believe that the Kerry Plan will give them a capital in east Jerusalem. What Palestinian officials are concerned about now is that it will be too small…

Abbas said in his speech late Thursday that he would not compromise on a demand for a Palestinian capital in east Jerusalem.

Earlier Thursday, Abbas’ aide Mohammed Ishtayeh said he believes the Kerry proposal will only refer to such a capital “in Jerusalem,” raising fears the Palestinians will be asked to make do with a small part of the eastern sector.
And as I mentioned above, Kerry appears to be pushing for Beit Hanina to be the capital of the Palestinians. The following is an excerpt from a recent article in the Guardian…

Reported proposals for a Palestinian capital in the east Jerusalem suburb of Beit Hanina, Israel’s retention of 10 West Bank settlement blocs, permanent control of the Jordan valley and the demand to recognise Israel as a Jewish homeland do not add up to a package that would likely be acceptable to even the most pliable Palestinian leader: thus the claim that President Mahmoud Abbas “exploded” when told of it by Kerry in Paris last weekend.
Most people don’t realize this, but this has actually been in the works for a very long time. In another article, I detailed how Obama has been promising east Jerusalem to the Palestinians since at least 2009.

Obama is always careful with his words regarding Jerusalem in public speeches, but what happens in private appears to be another matter entirely.

And very few people know this, but Barack Obama’s brother is actually extremely anti-Israel. The following is from a recent article by Walid Shoebat and Ben Barrack…

While in Sanaa, Yemein in 2010, President Barack Obama’s brother Malik Obama was at an event billed as the Orphans Development Fund (ODF) Conference. It’s quite the ironic title considering a group photo Malik is in that he has posted to his website. In the photo, he can be seen wearing a Hamas scarf (keffiyeh) that bears a well-known Palestinian slogan – ‘Jerusalem is ours – WE ARE COMING!’ It also includes a map of Palestine that says, ‘From the River to the Sea!’ In other words, Malik is saying, THERE IS NO ISRAEL.
Here is that photo…

And the sentiments expressed by Malik Obama truly represent the beliefs of the Palestinian authorities.

They are fully convinced that the entire land “from the river to the sea” belongs to them, and that is why they will never recognize that Israel is a Jewish state.

In fact, the foreign minister for the Palestinian Authority reiterated this just the other day…

The foreign minister for the Palestinian Authority says Palestinians will “never accept under any circumstances” the idea that Israel is a Jewish state, negating the 3,000 year Jewish connection with the Holy Land.

Foreign Minister Riad Malki, in an interview with the London-based Arabic newspaper Asharq Al-Awsatcharacterized the Israeli government demand that the Palestinians recognize Israel as a Jewish state as the most intractable issue facing the current round of peace talks sponsored by Secretary of State John Kerry.

“This is a sharply contentious issue. It would be dangerous to recognize this because this would mean our acceptance of the dissolution of our own history and ties and our historic right to Palestine,” Malki said.
Originally, the U.S. government was trying to get the Palestinians to agree to recognize Israel’s right to exist, but now the State Department has even backed down on this…

The United States believes there is no need for the Palestinian Authority (PA) to recognize Israel as a Jewish state as part of a peace agreement, State Department Spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Saturday.

Psaki, who spoke to the PA-based Arabic-language Al-Qudsnewspaper, said, “The American position is clear, Israel is a Jewish state. However, we do not see a need that both sides recognize this position as part of the final agreement.”
Unbelievable.

What a “peace plan” – Israel is supposed to permanently divide the holy land and permanently divide the city of Jerusalem, and in return all they are going to get is a vague promise of peace that could be broken at any time. The Palestinians are not even going to be required to recognize that Israel has a right to exist.

And let there be no doubt – the Palestinians do not plan to ever have lasting peace with Israel.

Sheikh Ikrema Sabri, a very high-ranking Muslim cleric in Jerusalem, said the following just the other day…

“We know the confrontation with Jews and Zionism will not end tomorrow. This is going to be a long confrontation and I have no doubt that Muslims will triumph in the end.”
These are not people that want peace. Just recently, Hamas unveiled a giant statue of a rocket aimed at Israel, and it runs paramilitary camps for teens that train them “to follow in the footsteps of the suicide martyrs“.

In fact, during a graduation ceremony for those camps, Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said the following…

“Love death for the sake of Allah as much as our enemies love life”
And Fathi Hamad, the Interior Minister for Hamas, made it very clear at that same event who those “enemies” actually are…

“This generation, Allah willing, will vanquish Israel,” said Hamas Interior Minister Fathi Hammad.

“Let me congratulate you on your future victory,” Hammad continued, “and on the annihilation of Israel. As I said yesterday, they only have eight years left.”
Sadly, the young people that are being indoctrinated at these camps are totally buying into the propaganda…

Omar Dawabha, an eleventh-grader who took part in the training, was quoted on the website of Hamas’s interior ministry saying that “he learned how to safeguard our rights and principles.” Another student, Mohammed Abu Nar, addressed the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem at the graduation ceremony.

“We are the pioneers of liberation, we are coming to purify you from the Zionists,” he said.
Anyone that believes that there will be lasting peace in the Middle East in such an environment is just being delusional.  Continue reading

Signs of the Times – Dividing of Jerusalem

I will gather the armies of the world into the valley of Jehoshaphat. There I will judge them for harming my people, my special possession, for scattering my people among the nations, and for dividing up my land. (Joel 3:1-2)

Then I was given a measuring stick, and I was told, “Go and measure the Temple of God and the altar, and count the number of worshipers. But do not measure the outer courtyard, for it has been turned over to the nations. They will trample the holy city for 42 months.

VATICAN SIGNS TREATY WITH “STATE OF PALESTINE”

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican signed a treaty with the “State of Palestine” on Friday, saying it hoped its legal recognition of the state would help stimulate peace with Israel and that the treaty itself would serve as a model for other Mideast countries.

Vatican Foreign Minister Paul Gallagher and his Palestinian counterpart, Riad al-Malki, signed the treaty at a ceremony inside the Vatican.

Israel expressed disappointment when the Vatican announced last month that it had reached final agreement with the “State of Palestine” on the treaty regulating the life of the Catholic Church in the Palestinian territories.

It repeated that regret in a Foreign Ministry statement Friday, saying the move hurt peace prospects and would discourage the Palestinians from returning to direct negotiations. It warned that it would study the agreement “and its implications for future cooperation between Israel and the Vatican.”

Gallagher, though, said he hoped the Vatican’s recognition “may in some way be a stimulus to bringing a definitive end to the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which continues to cause suffering for both parties.”

He said that he hoped the treaty could serve as a model for the church in other Mideast countries, where Christians are a minority and often persecuted.

The Vatican had welcomed the decision by the U.N. General Assembly in 2012 to recognize a Palestinian state and had referred to the Palestine state since. But the treaty marked its first legal recognition of the Palestinian territory as a state.

Al-Malki called the treaty an “historic agreement” and said it marked “a recognition of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, freedom and dignity in an independent state of their own, free from the shackles of occupation.”

The United States and Israel oppose recognizing the Palestinian state, arguing that it undermines U.S.-led efforts to negotiate an Israeli-Palestinian deal on the terms of Palestinian statehood. Most countries in Western Europe have held off on recognition, but some have hinted that their position could change if peace efforts remain deadlocked.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon called the treaty itself one-sided, saying the text ignored “the historic rights of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel and to the places holy to Judaism in Jerusalem.”

Signs of the Times – Wars and Rumors of Wars

This is Unrestricted Warfare Whether We Admit It or Not

Unconditional_warfareIt shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that China is following the strategy they so eloquently explained in the 1999 strategic masterpiece, Unrestricted Warfare. Yet, we continue to seem shocked when we learn about some of the strategies being employed. The simple fact is that elements in China, along with Russia, are preparing to unseat American leadership from the world. This is no longer conjecture. The preponderance of the evidence is more than sufficient to draw a rational conclusion.

Let’s look at some of the critical facts. First, we know that information warfare is already at work and the goal is to displace American global leadership. From a Bill Gertz article last week in The Washington Times:

CHINESE COLONEL ON INFORMATION WARFARE

By Bill Gertz – – Wednesday, June 3, 2015

Retired Chinese Col. Liu Mingfu, one of Beijing’s most significant military supremacists, this week confirmed that China is using information warfare against its enemies.

Col. Liu spoke Monday night at the Georgetown home of Michael Pillsbury, a longtime consultant to the Pentagon on China, in promoting the English-language version of the colonel’s 2010 book, “The China Dream.” The book calls for China to replace the United States as global hegemon. The book’s ideas were adopted by Beijing’s communist rulers and have become the main “thought” of current party boss and President Xi Jinping.

Asked about the contradiction between official claims that China seeks peace and the covert use of the so-called three warfares — psychological, media and legal information operations — against enemies, Col. Liu said: “I don’t deny it….

Col. Liu in his book urged China to build up its military power to swiftly replace the United States as the world’s global power. He wrote that the U.S.-Chinese rivalry is a “competition to be the leading country, a conflict over who rises and falls to dominate the world.”

“To save itself, to save the world, China must prepare to become the [world’s] helmsman,” he states.

It is important to understand that many in the Chinese leadership see war with America to be inevitable. America doesn’t want to hear that but it’s true. Americans naively want to believe that China is content as a trading partner motivated solely by global profit. Chinese intentions are far greater than that. They are teaming with Russia to take control. That’s been a long-term strategy that was proposed by Russia but rejected by China in 2008. We have reason to suspect that the Chinese are prepared to consider it now.

The issue is that China is no longer willing to allow America to set terms. Their South China Sea ambitions will not be checked without risking war. That’s their clear message as shown in this UK Telegraph article:

US-China war ‘inevitable’ unless Washington drops demands over South China Sea

May 26, 2015

Warning from state-run China newspaper as Beijing reveals plans for development of disputed South China Sea islands

China has vowed to step up its presence in the South China Sea in a provocative new military white paper, amid warnings that a US-China war is “inevitable” unless Washington drops its objections to Beijing’s activities.

While most of the American media has chosen to ignore the evidence (Bill Gertz being a rare and valuable exception), the UK papers have been more truthful. Perhaps the British are better positioned to recognize a lagging Empire. Kudos to DRUDGE REPORT who puts significant headlines into the American conscience.

Another example from the UK Telegraph:

How China and Russia are teaming up to erode American dominance

While the US military is still the most formidable in the world, Beijing and Moscow are catching up.

May 12, 2015 By Tom Phillips, Beijing and Tom Parfitt, Moscow.

China has dispatched a convoy of warships for its first ever naval exercises in the Mediterranean, together with a Russian flotilla.
The drills demonstrate a strengthening bond between Moscow and Beijing, who – despite having no formal military alliance – see their combined might as a counterbalance to US power. Both countries have been modernising their armed forces, and while their equipment still lags behind top-end Western technology, experts say they are closing the gap.

Xi Jinping came to power in 2012 vowing to dedicate his presidency to building the “Chinese Dream” of the “great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation”.
Part of that dream involves a major overhaul of China’s 2.3 million-man military which is three-times the size of Russia’s but which critics say has become bloated, corrupt and unfit for battle.

“Chinese leaders see a strong military as critical to prevent other countries from taking steps that would damage China’s interests and to ensure China can defend itself, should deterrence fail,” said a Pentagon report released on Friday.

Before focusing on traditional military efforts, however, it is more important to recognize the information, subversion, and economic warfare methods already being waged against us.

In regard to economic espionage, The Wall Street Journal reported:

U.S. Charges Six Chinese Citizens With Economic Espionage

May 19, 2015 by Andrew Grossman

U.S. alleges group, including three professors, stole sensitive wireless technologyWASHINGTON—Six Chinese citizens, including three professors who trained together at the University of Southern California, stole sensitive wireless technology from U.S. companies and spirited it back to China, the Justice Department charged.

The six individuals allegedly swiped trade secrets from U.S. companies Avago Technologies and Skyworks Solutions Inc. relating to how to filter out unwanted signals in wireless devices, according to an indictment unsealed late Monday.

They then set up a joint venture with China’s state-controlled Tianjin University to produce and sell equipment using the technology, according to the indictment, and won contracts from both businesses and “military entities.”

The U.S. companies supply components for Apple’s iPhone, among other devices. Authorities said the case demonstrates persistent efforts to steal American technology developed in places like Silicon Valley, where Avago’s U.S. operations are based.

“Sensitive technology developed by U.S. companies in Silicon Valley and throughout California continues to be vulnerable to coordinated and complex efforts sponsored by foreign governments to steal that technology,” San Francisco U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag, whose office is prosecuting the case, said Tuesday.

It is important to understand that China has an elaborate space warfare strategy where every American satellite would be put at risk. That is a pretty powerful economic warfare weapon. Then, when you consider China’s massive cyber warfare capabilities, there is every reason to be concerned. The recent revelation of a massive government data breach is only the most recent example of this effort. What do we know?

http://player.cnbc.com/cnbc_global?playertype=synd&byGuid=3000386226&size=640_360

  1. The breach compromised very serious U.S. government databases.
  2. The database information goes back to 1985.
  3. The database contains sensitive information that has the potential to compromise U.S. national security.
  4. The hack was likely from China.

Consider this from The Washington Post:

With a series of major hacks, China builds a database on Americans

By Ellen Nakashima June 5, 2015

China is building massive databases of Americans’ personal information by hacking government agencies and U.S. health-care companies, using a high-tech tactic to achieve an age-old goal of espionage: recruiting spies or gaining more information on an adversary, U.S. officials and analysts say.

Groups of hackers working for the Chinese government have compromised the networks of the Office of Personnel Management, which holds data on millions of current and former federal employees, as well as the health insurance giant Anthem, among other targets, the officials and researchers said.

“They’re definitely going after quite a bit of personnel information,” said Rich Barger, chief intelligence officer of ThreatConnect, a Northern Virginia cybersecurity firm. “We suspect they’re using it to understand more about who to target [for espionage], whether electronically or via human recruitment.”…

“This is part of their strategic goal — to increase their intelligence collection via big-data theft and big-data aggregation,” said a U.S. government official who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive topic. “It’s part of a strategic plan.”…

The data could help Chinese analysts do more effective targeting of individuals, said a former National Security Agency official. “They can find specific individuals they want to go after, family members,” he said.

“This is an intelligence operation designed to help the Chinese government,” the China expert said. “It’s a new phase in an evolution of what they’re doing. It certainly requires greater sophistication on their part in terms of being able to take out this much data.” Continue reading

In the new policy document published on Tuesday, China outlined its plans to shift from a defensive military posture to placing emphasis on offensive capabilities.

Claiming that it faces a “grave and complex array of security threats”, including challenges to its sovereignty over the South China Sea, the policy document released by the State Council says the military will step up its “open seas protection”.

The on-going reclamation by China at Subi reef seen from Pagasa island

China’s forces will no longer be limited to defence of the nation’s territory but will project its military power further beyond its borders at sea and more assertively in the air in order to safeguard its maritime possessions, the white paper states.

While the air force will shift focus from “territorial air defence” to both offence and defence, the Chinese army will increase its global mobility and its artillery will improve its “medium and long-range precision strikes”, it said. In an editorial in The Global Times, a tabloid owned by the Chinese Communist Party through another newspaper, the paper described the construction of runways, harbour facilities and buildings on the disputed Spratly Islands as the nation’s “most important bottom line”.

The article – which appeared just days after a US aircraft ignored repeated warnings from the Chinese military to fly a reconnaissance mission over the islands – said Beijing does not want a conflict with the US, “but if it were to come, we have to accept it.

If the United States’ bottom line is that China has to halt its activities, then a US-China war is inevitable in the South China Sea”, said the paper, which is often seen as a mouthpiece of the government in Beijing. Continue reading

Signs of the Times – Are mystery ‘trumpet blasts’ in sky from God?

In the final book of the New Testament known as the Book of Revelation, angels are shown to be sounding trumpets, accompanied by a variety of supernatural plagues upon Planet Earth.

And now, mysterious, unexplained sounds in the sky that some are likening to

trumpet blasts are puzzling people all over the world, including the United States.

As Britain’s Daily Mail reports, “Sounding like a trumpet or a collective from a brass section of an orchestra, a selection of videos shot from the Canada to Ukraine, via the U.S., Germany and Belarus show strange goings on above us.”

Get in-depth details about angelic trumpet blasts as well as both the FIRST and SECOND resurrection (yes, there’s a second one, too) in this autographed best-seller that explains in detail what’s coming in your future!

Numerous videos are posted on YouTube from spots all over the world, with people wondering just what is causing the strange phenomenon.

See video and hear the mysterious sound for yourself:

The first time the sky sounds were posted on YouTube was back in 2008, as a resident of Homel, Belarus, made a recording.

Later that year, another anonymous user posted “ear-deafening” sounds they claimed “were not a hoax” echoing through a quiet neighborhood believed to be in America.

In June 2013, Kimberly Wookey of Terrace, British Columbia, Canada, first caught the sound, and has continued her recordings through May 7 of this year.

Wookey said on YouTube: “On the morning of August 29, 2013 at approximately 7:30am I was awoken by these sounds.

“I shot out of bed realizing it was the same sounds I had heard before and I ran looking for a camera to try to capture them with. I came out into the living room to find my seven-year-old son awake and scared wondering what was going on. He had said the noises woke him up as well and shook his window.

“I managed to record three clips showing almost five minutes of these strange sounds. After it was over and I sat down at the computer to upload the video. After checking my Facebook I noticed a lot of locals had heard the same sounds again but this time it was far more widespread.

‘I have no idea what these sounds are but it is pretty strange and I am glad that I was able to catch them this time and share what I heard. The sounds were heard again on Sept 8th at 6:30am so far we have confirmed reports of it being heard from town to the lake, 25km away.”

Wookey is skeptical the sounds are caused by anything unearthly.

“I personally do not believe this has any religious connection, nor do I believe it is aliens, graders, trains, construction, etc.,” she noted. “I do believe it could be a geophysical phenomenon.”

image: http://www.wnd.com/files/2015/02/apocalypse.jpg

apocalypse

The sound was also captured in Kiev, Ukraine, in August 2011 with one eyewitness saying, “The sound was extremely loud, with some people 30-40km from the recording also hearing it in other cities. It was in the news with the investigation with specialists and scientists, but there is still no exact explanation.”

Some who have heard the phenomenon have reportedly experienced severe nightmares for days afterward.

Aaron Traylor of Montana is among them, who said after recording the sound on February 18, 2012:

I’ve had vivid nightmares ever since I posted the very eerie strange sounds that has Missoula talking and looking towards the sky; awful, awful nightmares.

My wife woke me from a dream last night where she says I was screaming like she’s never heard me scream before.

I was taking my daughter out for her daily exercise along with my dog. I started to hear the sounds early on in our little adventure and the first time it was heard my dog perked her ears up and my daughter stopped in her tracks.

That sound was identical to the one I had taped later, and lasted just as long. Now since I’ve been following this worldwide strange sounds phenomenon for some time, the whole “End of the world” thing popped instantly into my head.

What if this was one of those sounds? I had my phone ready to capture the next one just in case. Sure enough, five minutes later the sound had returned.

Traylor doesn’t think the noise has anything to do with modes of transportation, such as trains or planes.

“The Missoula rail system is one very loud and unpredictable beast. Trains connecting their loads to another is a sound very familiar to locals. Loud bangs and screeches can be heard from nearly 10 miles away at any given point throughout the day,” he said.

“Still, that doesn’t explain the fan-like whirring sound that can be heard at the start of the recording. I’ve lived in this neighborhood for nearly four years and have heard all kinds of planes coming and going overhead and on the runway. I’ve never heard a plane sound like this before.

“My neighborhood is very quiet and we were about three blocks away from any busy intersection during the incident. Can’t say I’ve ever heard an automobile of any kind with that kind of noise.”

In 2012, several people in a parking lot in Allen, Texas, heard the sounds, with one commenting: “It’s weird, I’ve never heard anything like that.”

At the University of Oklahoma, geoscientist David Deming has been writing about a phenomenon called “the Hum” – “a mysterious and untraceable sound that is heard in certain locations around the world by two to ten percent of the population.”

Deming wrote in the Journal of Scientific Exploration that possible sources of the Hum might be telephone transmissions and “aircraft operated by the U.S. Navy for the purpose of submarine communications.”

NASA has said Planet Earth has “natural radio emissions,” explaining: “If humans had radio antennas instead of ears, we would hear a remarkable symphony of strange noises coming from our own planet. Scientists call them ‘tweeks,’ ‘whistlers’ and ‘sferics.’

“They sound like background music from a flamboyant science-fiction film, but this is not science fiction. Earth’s natural radio emissions are real and, although we’re mostly unaware of them, they are around us all the time.”

Some other theories being discussed include:

The sounding of a shofar (ram’s horn), the grinding of the Earth’s tectonic plates, atmospheric pressure, construction work, space aliens, secret sky weaponry such as the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program, or HAARP, and, of course, the activities of angels.

Throughout the Book of Revelation, the apostle John, who was writing Aegean Sea island of Patmos, described the voices of angels as sounding like trumpets.

image: http://www.wnd.com/files/2015/03/Trumpets.jpg

Trumpets

“After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.” (Revelation 4:1)

The eighth chapter of Revelation notes seven angels having seven trumpets to sound, and when they do, catastrophic events unfold, including a scorching of a third of all green-plant life on Earth, a third of the sea becoming blood and swarms of locusts given the power of scorpions.

The apostle Paul described the resurrection of dead believers in Jesus to occur at the “last” trumpet blast.

“Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.” (1 Corinthians 15:51-52)

Signs of the Times – Vatican to officially recognize Palestinian statehood in new treaty

CNN)The Vatican announced Wednesday that it had brokered a treaty with the “state of Palestine,” upsetting Israeli advocates and propelling Pope Francis into the heart of yet another geopolitical fray.

The treaty is expected to be signed “in the near future,” the Vatican said. Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, is scheduled to visit Pope Francis on Saturday, the day before the church canonizes two Palestinian nuns.

The treaty is thought to mark the first time the Holy See has formally recognized Palestinian statehood in a legal document. Vatican policy, however, has long held that a two-state solution is the best road to peace in the Holy Land. The Vatican has referred to Palestine as a state since November 2012, when the United Nations voted to recognize it as a nonmember observer state, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, a Vatican spokesman, told CNN. At the time, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI led the Catholic Church.

“Therefore there is a coherent continuity,” Lombardi continued in an email. “Obviously this is an international agreement with the State of Palestine and this reaffirms the recognition.”

According to Palestinian officials, as many as 135 states now recognize Palestine as a state. Few political leaders, though, have the moral authority and popular appeal of Pope Francis.

While the Vatican commended the midlevel diplomats who hammered out the agreement, Wednesday’s announcement seems sure to polish the Pope’s image as a one-man United Nations, confidently wading into turbulent political waters and unafraid of upsetting the status quo. Continue reading

It was an interesting week last week. For one thing, Chinese company Alibaba debuted as the largest IPO in the history of the world. Larger than the Initial Public Offerings of Facebook, Twitter, Google, Apple, and Microsoft combined. At the same time, there was a Senate report indicating that China hacked U.S. military contractors in a significant way at least twenty times in the past year. Alibaba’s IPO to end US dominance in technology sector: expert

English.news.cn 2014-09-19

LONDON, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) — Alibaba’s IPO could well be the end of U.S. dominance in the world technology sector, a professor from a Britain’s business school told Xinhua on Thursday.

“Alibaba’s annual growth rate of more than 30 percent shows that the gap between the Chinese companies, Alibaba and Tencent, and U.S. companies is getting ever closer,” said Qing Wang, professor from Warwick Business School, one of the most prestigious and highly selective business schools in the world.

“The ability to understand customers intimately and continuously innovate should enable them to expand overseas with US dominance in the world technology sector gradually being broken,” said professor Wang . . .

A report released this week by a commission that advises Congress on U.S.-China economic issues took aim at the legal structure underpinning Alibaba as well as a host of other Chinese Internet firms, calling it “a complex and highly risky scheme of legal arrangements.” It warned that the structure could lead to losses by shareholders in the U.S.

“U.S. shareholders face major risks from the complexity and purpose” of the structure, said the report, released on Wednesday by the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission.

They get shares in a scheme that might share profits if 1) the company makes money, 2) the accounting shows the profit, 3) the CEO decides to share the profits, and 4) the Chinese government allows it.

Other issues that should have been raised about the largest IPO in history include wondering “What do they intend to do with the money?” and “Will they protect American consumer data?” The reality is that they intend to use a good deal of this money to acquire other American technology. They also intend to grow their American business and learn as much as they can about American consumers. And, if China was able to pressure Google, we can assume they will outright control Alibaba. They’ve already demonstrated that control over Jack Ma, Alibaba’s charismatic founder. As The Wall Street Journal noted, you don’t become China’s richest man without the Chinese government.

All of these issues were raised at a Press Club event hosted by The Center for Security Policy. I voiced similar concerns in a Fox Business segment as well:

But who cares as long as we are making money? China is our friend, right?

We can believe that if we just ignore the reality that China is preparing for “infowar.” The problem is that they are planning :”infowar” as part of all-out economic warfare capabilities according to Bill Gertz:

Xi urges PLA to wage ‘infowar’

Chinese President Xi Jinping is urging the People’s Liberation Army to shift its focus from preparing solely for a future conventional and nuclear conflict to developing “information warfare” capabilities as part of Beijing’s military buildup.

Mr. Xi called for developing advanced military capabilities, including information warfare, as part of what he termed the global revolution in military affairs — a term coined by the Soviet Union’s military and later adopted by the U.S. military for what is now high-technology and intelligence-driven warfare.

The military reforms were discussed during a meeting Aug. 29 of the ruling Communist Party’s Central Committee. In addition to being Chinese president, Mr. Xi is chairman of the Central Military Commission — the ultimate power organ in China that directs all military activities.

“Faced with the severe challenges to our national security and stability and the deep-seated contradictions and problems with reform, it is even more pressing that we greatly liberate our ideas and concepts, have the courage to change our fixed mindsets of mechanized warfare, and establish the ideological concept of information warfare,” Mr. Xi was quoted as saying in state media.

State-run China National Television, the Internet propaganda broadcaster, reported Sept. 2 that “apart from safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and territory, Mr. Xi emphasized strategic interests and the ability to counter non-traditional security threats including economic threats” — an indication China is preparing to wage economic warfare in the future.

China currently holds $1.28 trillion worth of U.S. government bonds, and Chinese military leaders in the past have threatened to use the debt holdings to punish the United States for arms sales to Taiwan.

The directive to build information warfare capabilities follows disclosure in a Pentagon report earlier this year that China is engaged in information warfare. Continue reading
